Currently many studies are based on Randomized Controlled Trials, samples of patients which are very limiting and expensive and have low applicability in surgery for ethical reasons. The registries will be the new gold standard.

What you should have high quality registries? They refine and support the EBM, scientific studies, perform structures and quality benchmarks, operating protocols, instruments , prosthetics and systems surveillance and in the future of prediction models.

To achieve their objectives, P4P programs ( Performance Measurement ) use different measures of performance – health outcomes and clinical processes, patient safety, patient experience in assistance, use of resources ( ie , efficiency ), and often structural indicators as implementation and competent use of information technology.

In collaboration with EuroSpine and M.E. Müller Center of Bern University (Switzerland), represented by its Institute for Evaluative Research in Medicine (IEFM), SpineTango has been installed for the first time in november 2002. From that time the system has been upgraded in an eveolution process based on communication between doctors, institute and industry.

Continuous innovations in spinal surgery requests a valid documentation that measures effectiveness, security and economic efficiency of new tecniques and technologies. Spinetango, the international Spinal Registry, is an extraordinary base for this purpose. The increasing number of participants in SpineTango defines the system success, that has always been an academical project not commercial.

SpineTango is hosted on MEMdoc (for further info visit MEMdoc website).

SpineTango’s IT and its security system are based on distributed server concept, which includes a series of national modules, each hosting a database that only contains personal data of patients, whereas the central database in Bern University holds anonymous clynical data; with this structure, the system fulfils the highest security standard.

Data can be send online in real time with a 128-bit encrypting, and online data allow to test specifically every clinic, both on national or internation level. SpineTango modules are already active and fully operational in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Italy, North America, Mexico and Brazil.
